EEA’s Asbestos Course Descriptions

New York State Accredited Certification Classes

Environmental Education Association offers several asbestos courses that will leave you certified in New York State, able to meet and recognize various legal requirements. Learn how to tackle asbestos testing, sampling and abatement projects, including designing and monitoring. We also offer several asbestos refresher courses to make sure your certification remains up to date.

ONLINE ASBESTOS REFRESHERS 

  • 4-8 Hours — All asbestos certificates must be renewed annually under NYSDOH and USEPA requirements. Attendees must provide proof of eligibility to attend.
  • Online training is done via live webinars. Each user must have their own device, a webcam, and speakers to participate.

 

ASBESTOS ABATEMENT AIR SAMPLING TECHNICIAN

  • Understanding how asbestos can contaminate the air without visible traces is crucial for safe and effective asbestos abatement.

  • This 16-hour course educates participants on performing accurate asbestos air sampling. Training includes the history of asbestos air sample testing, health effects of asbestos, identifying asbestos in air samples, and conducting asbestos air sampling compliant with federal and state regulations.

  • Upon passing the course exam, participants receive certification as EPA Certified Asbestos Abatement Air Sampling Technician. Refresher courses are required to maintain certification.

 

ASBESTOS ABATEMENT PROJECT DESIGNER

  • Careful planning is essential for asbestos abatement projects to ensure efficiency, precision, and safety. An Asbestos Abatement Project Designer manages this role.

  • This 24-hour course covers the health risks of asbestos, abatement control options, safety system design practices, and compliance with regulations. It prepares participants to plan and design effective abatement projects.

  • Upon passing the exam, participants are certified as EPA-certified Asbestos Abatement Project Designers. Refresher courses are required to maintain certification.

 

ASBESTOS ABATEMENT PROJECT MONITOR

  • Careful planning is essential for asbestos abatement projects to ensure efficiency, precision, and safety. An asbestos Abatement Project Designer manages this role.

  • This 24-hour course covers the health risks of asbestos, abatement control options, safety system design practices, and compliance with regulations. It prepares participants to plan and design effective abatement projects.

  • Upon passing the exam, participants are certified as EPA-certified Asbestos Abatement Project Designers. Refresher courses are required to maintain certification.

 

ASBESTOS ABATEMENT SUPERVISOR

  • Supervising asbestos abatement projects to ensure safety and compliance is the responsibility of an Asbestos Abatement Supervisor.

  • This 40-hour course covers identifying asbestos, health effects, PPE, air monitoring, and state-of-the-art abatement practices. It prepares supervisors to oversee asbestos removal, encapsulation, and repair activities.

  • Upon passing the exam, participants become EPA-certified Asbestos Abatement Supervisors. Certification requires periodic refresher courses.

 

ASBESTOS ABATEMENT WORKER

  • Effective asbestos abatement demands a thorough understanding of the hazards and safe removal practices.

  • This 32-hour course educates participants on detecting asbestos, health effects, personal hygiene on-site, PPE usage, and regulatory compliance. It prepares workers for safe and responsible asbestos abatement activities.

  • Upon passing the exam, participants receive certification as EPA-certified Asbestos Abatement Workers. Refresher courses are required to maintain certification.

 

ASBESTOS INSPECTOR

  • Conducting accurate asbestos inspections is essential for safe building renovation and demolition.

  • This 24-hour course provides education on health risks, asbestos detection, inspector PPE, pre-inspection procedures, and proper documentation. It prepares participants for thorough and responsible asbestos inspections.

  • Upon passing the exam, participants are certified as EPA-certified Asbestos Inspectors. Refresher courses are required to maintain certification.

 

ASBESTOS MANAGEMENT PLANNER

  • Effective project scheduling and administration are crucial for asbestos mitigation and response action planning.

  • This 16-hour course covers project scheduling, legal adherence, evaluating asbestos control options, developing management programs, and regulatory review. It prepares participants for roles in project coordination and asbestos management.

  • Upon passing the exam, participants become EPA-certified Asbestos Management Planners. Refresher courses are required to maintain certification.

 

ASBESTOS OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE

  • Maintenance staff conducting small asbestos-related activities must be properly trained for safe and effective operations.

  • This 16-hour course covers asbestos handling methods, respirator use, and work practices compliant with regulations. It prepares participants for small-scale asbestos cleanup and repair.

  • Upon passing the exam, participants receive certification to perform small-scale asbestos removal and repair. Refresher courses are required to maintain certification.

 

ASBESTOS ALLIED TRADES

  • Workers on asbestos abatement sites, even those not directly handling asbestos, need asbestos-related education for safety.

  • This 16-hour course covers asbestos dangers, detection, PPE usage, job site preparation and decontamination procedures. It prepares participants to work safely on abatement sites.

  • Upon passing the exam, participants become certified as Asbestos Allied Tradespersons. Refresher courses are required to maintain certification.

 

ASBESTOS REFRESHER

  • Maintaining certification for asbestos-related roles requires periodic refresher courses.

  • Each asbestos course has a corresponding refresher course ranging from 4 to 8 hours, based on the field. Certification must be renewed annually under USEPA and NYSDOH requirements. Proof of eligibility is required to attend.

 

RECERTIFICACIÓN DE ASBESTO (ASBESTOS WORKER REFRESHER IN SPANISH)

  • 8 Horas — Todas las certificaciones de trabajadores de asbestos  deben renovarse  todos los años en conforme con  los requisitos de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de los Estados Unidos (USEPA) y el Departamento de Labor del  Estado de  Nueva York (NYSDOL). Los asistentes deben demostrar que han completado una formación inicial o de refresco en la misma disciplina en los últimos veinticuatro meses para ser elegible para la recertificación.

 

Local education agency (LEA) Asbestos designated person

  • Receiving an official designation from an LEA is necessary to work with asbestos.

  • This 2-hour course, available online or in-person, covers asbestos health effects, detection, and identification of asbestos-containing materials, and relevant federal and state laws.

 

ASBESTOS Awareness - LEA Maintenance Workers

  • LEA maintenance workers must receive asbestos awareness training within 60 days of employment.

  • This 2-hour course, available online or in-person, covers health risks, detection, and identification of asbestos-containing materials. It is required for personnel working in buildings containing asbestos materials.

 

ASBESTOS Awareness - OSHA construction

  • 2 Hours online or in-person — OSHA requires employers to institute and ensure participation in a worker training program for construction employees exposed to fiber levels (either measured or anticipated) at or above the permissible exposure limit (0.1 fibers per cubic centimeter (f/cc) as an 8-hour, time-weighted average (TWA) and/or the excursion limit (1.0 f/cc as a 30-minute TWA)).
  • This course provides workers with the basic knowledge and skills to identify and avoid asbestos hazards in construction sites. The course covers the following topics:
    • The history and uses of asbestos
    • The health effects and risks of asbestos exposure
    • The types and locations of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) and presumed asbestos-containing materials (PACM) in buildings
    • The OSHA standards and requirements for asbestos in construction, including the permissible exposure limit (PEL), the regulated areas, the engineering controls, the work practices, the personal protective equipment (PPE), the medical surveillance, the recordkeeping, and the training
    • The methods and techniques for recognizing and preventing asbestos exposure, such as visual inspection, sampling, labeling, posting, and notification
    • The procedures and protocols for handling and disposing of asbestos waste
    • The emergency response and incident reporting for asbestos-related incidents

The course is based on the OSHA regulations at 29 CFR § 1926.1101 (PDF) (53 pp, 408K, about PDF) and follows the OSHA guidelines for asbestos awareness training. The course lasts 2 hours and includes lectures, videos, quizzes and interactive exercises. The course is suitable for workers who may come into contact with asbestos but who do not disturb it, such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters and general laborers.

The course does not qualify workers to perform asbestos abatement or removal activities, which require additional training and certification. Upon completion of the course, the participants will receive a certificate of attendance. The course must be repeated annually to maintain compliance with OSHA.
